UK Copyright Law to be Reviewed!

Britain's intellectual property laws are to be reviewed to "make them fit for the internet age," prime minister David Cameron has announced.

Yet again the government (this time the Conservatives) are threatening to mess with the Copyright law which was created in 1988 as a result of a lot of hard work and lobbying by the creative industry, one result was that the creator of the intellectual property is the Copyright holder by default (there are some exceptions when the person is employed).

Quote the BBC:
"The government will do a 6 month review to look at what the UK can learn from US rules on the use of copyright material without the rights holder's permission".

What right does anyone have to use the property of others without their permission? The Internet Freedom campaigners would like see fair use as a legal, I would consider this as being an approach that not only dilutes the value of creative works but will also hit the creative industry hard financially, it will also make it even harder than is at present to get reasonable damages if work is used illegally.

Quote from Chief executive Richard Mollet of the Publishers Association:
"The immutable fact remains that the people who generate and invest in creativity deserve and need to be rewarded."

People Ignor Generic Photos Online

The New York Time has reported on a study by Jakob Nielsen, a web site consultant and author of several books about design and user interface. Published on 2nd Nov 2010.

Quote:

"In the past he has argued that large images annoy users because of the long load times, even with a high-speed Internet connection. Now, in a new study, he points out that the random or stock images on Web sites are completely ignored by users, add more clutter to the page and don’t necessarily help from a business standpoint."

and

"Mr. Nielsen concludes with some advice to those using the Web to hawk products or content: “Invest in good photo shoots: a great photographer can add a fortune to your Web site’s business value.” After all, he notes, most sites are full of “fluff — of which there’s too much already on the Web.”"

Photograph of fungi using Helicon Focus App

This photograph was an experimental shot to test an application called Helicon Focus.

When photographing subjects close-up like the fungi shot above you get very little depth-of-field and it can be very difficult to get enough of the subject in focus. By shooting a series of images (in this case 14) at various focusing points and importing them into Helicon, you can combine the images together to make one final shot that is all in focus. This one took a little trial and error but finally I got the result I wanted. Camera used was a Sinar X with Phase One P45+ digital MF back.

My favorite photograph I have ever taken must be the one I took from a hot air balloon whilst flying over Marrakech city centre on a Decembers day a few years ago. I was on a job at the time to photograph Richard Branson's Global Challenger balloon, and we got a treat of a balloon flight over the city. The maze of small alleyways and crammed houses was an amazing site to see from above so it was a 'must' to photograph.

The photograph was entered into a competition (London Photographic Association Competition) and won first prize in 'Urbanscape 1'.

Darrin photographs Luxury Motor Yacht

The Squadron 78 motor yacht was made by Fairline Boats and is the largest of their fleet.

I was commissioned to take interior photographs before the vessel was delivered to it's Dutch customer that week.

The shoot took place at Ipswitch docks, the photos being taken at nightime so as to avoid daylight showing through the windows. Each shot was propped and lit to show the space and bespoke design, mixing Tungsten and daylight light sources and shooting on a Phase One P45+ with a 28mm lens attached.

We finished at 2am, just as a violent thunder storm started and packed up in the rain.

Portrait photography in the East of England

Local government needed to produce a report on the East of England called the Regional Economic Strategy. My photography was used as full page introductions to each section. The brief was to photograph various people who were prominent in the business community in a setting that related to their work. There were over twenty different locations throughout the eastern region. The locations were diverse and included mills, nature reserves, universities, building sites and high tech centres.
